Johnny Clegg was born in the UK. In the late 70s he became entranced with South African Zulu culture. During the height of apartheid oppression he along with Zulu Sipho Mchunu formed Juluka. Some will knock this as a poppy exercise and some may call it exploitative, but I can tell you from a first hand conversation with Sipho back circa 1983 that he and Johnny felt they were building important bridges at a time when it was dangerous for the races to mix in South Africa. It’s infectious and if you let it, it will make you smile. Juluka means “sweat”, and was the name of a bull owned by Mchunu. Johnny was made a honorary white Zulu for his efforts.
